I’ve been quiet these past few months here, but I haven’t been sitting around twiddling my thumbs. Back in September 2016, I started a collaboration with the company Gingiber. They make super cute piece with loads of different animals and I highly recommenced checking them out. Stacie, who is the artist behind the name, is now a fabric designer with Moda Fabrics. We met and talked about pattern design at the Spring 2016 Quilt Market, and decided to work together.

I designed two smaller quilts to go along with her upcoming fabric line called Merrily. You can see one of the quilt and wall hanging above. Both were made specifically to fit her illustrated panels from this line and the previous one called Thicket. Both also include tips and tricks that double as skill builders. That was my favorite part.

The patterns will be printed booklets, and available to purchase the same time the fabric is available in stores. I am super excited about this and I’ll share more once they are available!

Stacie was so great to work with, I have agreed to continue the collaboration and we will be releasing three more patterns within the year to go along with her next line (name and images are top secret, so I have to wait to share that info).

As well as these two patterns, and then the three after, I myself will also be releasing several patterns. Both PDF and printed. I’m going to take the leap, and this will be the year of patterns!! Woohoo!

For the last 6 weeks I have been talking abut and working on this pattern. I have name it the Pixelated Circles Quilt, because if you add some background fabric in the circles it gives it a pixel like look. … Continue reading →

For the last 6 weeks I have been talking abut and working on this pattern. I have name it the Pixelated Circles Quilt, because if you add some background fabric in the circles it gives it a pixel like look.

About the Pattern:

The pattern includes four template sizes which can be assembled into four different size quilt. The quilts range from 18″ to 56″ square. The templates can also be used to make numerous other things like pouches, pillows, bags, journal covers and more.

I also designed the quilt to work with pre-cut fabric bundles or scraps. The quilt shown above uses four 5″ charm pack, which means it went together rather quickly.

There are curved seams involved, but I promise you, they aren’t as scary as they seem!

I’ve added this, and a handful of my other patterns to my new shop! I switched to shopify so that I could manage my own digital downloads and offer free PDF’s too! This means I will have more patterns soon AND I’m looking to add embroidery files to the catalog. I’m excited.

You can find it all here:

Since this is my first pattern to be released that isn’t a paper piecing pattern, I started a test group to make sure I didn’t miss anything. They were seriously the best group too. They helped with grammar, spelling, misplaced words, incorrect yardage, etc. They also made some of the best sample pieces and I’m so excited to share of few of them today.

This sample was pieced and assembled by Margaret Smerd‎. She used the center block from the quilt as the centerpiece for this awesome bag! As you can see she fussy cut the the little bears and it really adds to the piece. You can see more of her work on her Instagram profile under @Margo_bibz

This fantastic bag was dreamed up and assembled by Angela Zolner. She took one of the full circles and a handful of quadrants and came up with the brilliant configuration. I was so happy when I saw the finished pieces because her sneak peeks didn’t give anything away. You can see more up close shots and other creations by Angela on her IG profile @stitchyscientiest

This notepad cover was another super creative creation in the test pool. Yevonne Cearns came up with this design and used a bunch of half circles on the front, back and inside. She also added all that perfect hand stitching around each one. She shows off more of her stuff on her IG profile under @yevonnec.

Well obviously I think this project is adorable with that puppy hanging out on it! (all dogs are puppies to me) This huge pillow was pieced and quilted by Deirdre Devlin and she used the center circle from the quilt. I love the colors she chose and the mix of straight and circular quilting. Deirdre posts a lot of neat quilting project on her IG profile @nerd_vikings, you should check it out.

I had asked a few if the testers just to try out a block, no project needed. Belinda Mollison-Sadd made the block above AND another small version in a completely different color way. You can see more shots of both on her IG @bjaney. This was Belinda’s first time sewing curves and fussy cutting fabric. I think she did a fantastic job, don’t you?! Look at those curves!

This block should win a prize for best use of fabric. Melissa Draper‎ made the smallest circle, which is super tiny at 6″ finished! You can only guess how small those squares are. She used all vintage fabric, including that wondering background fabric that was already adorned by yarn!! How cool is that? You can see all the other wonder things Melissa makes over on her IG @msmelis.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

I still have a huge folder filled with more samples, but I want to spread them out so no ones photos get overlooked. They are seriously all just wonderful and I am beyond grateful for them all!!

Keep checking back over the next week for more quilt layout ideas, information about the pattern and more sample pieces.. Who knows, maybe I’ll figure out the editing software and have a little video too. Fingers crossed.

Before you head off though, I am offering 20% off all the patterns in the shop to celebrate the Pixelated Circles Quilt Pattern AND my 34th birthday!!! Just use the code PCQ20 at checkout. Coupon code expires Friday, Sept. 2nd at midnight EST.

Over the winter I did a lot of “secret sewing”, which is basically just me sewing stuff for companies, but having to wait to share it. This quilt above, the Equestrian Quilt, was one of them.

This week the free pattern went live over on the Michael Miller fabrics website! It shows exactly what fabric you will need, and it includes a piecing guideline and two foundation paper piecing templates for those odd size flying geese i included.

This quilt was way outside my comfort zone when it came to design and colors, but I think that was really good for me. It shows that I can do more and it stretched my imagination pretty far.

I was very sick before assembling this quilt, so once I had my energy back I whipped it up super quick. This means I didn’t take many photos of the actual assembly, but I did get a shot of it right before it went on to the longarm!

And here is some shots of it ON the longarm. I used this quilt as a way to practice some new techniques I had learned, plus practice switching between different color threads. It was a lot of fun to make!

If you would like to make one of your own, go and check out the FREE pattern! The fabric is also available for purchase at many quilt shops online and in person. I would just call ahead of time to make sure it’s all in stock.

Keep checking back for more quilt patterns, and more designs with Michael Miller. I absolutely love working with them.

It was my first time doing an all over free form design on my longarm too. What do you think?

You don’t necessarily need to use this exact fabric too. I imagine it would look awesome with some solids or other patterns. The sky is the limit!

If you do end up trying out the pattern, please let me know! I’d love to see.

I have checked and rechecked the PDF many times and most of the testers have sent me finished photos and/or notes. I finally feel comfortable and ready to sell this pattern!!! Oh yeah, by the way, I’ve been working on a quilt pattern…

First though. let’s look at two of the amazing quilt tops my testers sent me photos of! Maybe it will get you in the mood to try the pattern out?!

This first top was pieced by Leah Corbin / @leahrene on InstaGram. She was beyond helpful when it came to the little mix ups with the pattern and such. She did a beautiful job piecing these nine blocks together and I am in love with her use of patterned fabric! You’ll probably be seeing more of Leah’s work here, because I’m totally asking her to test more pieces down the road.

This next quilt top is by the lovely Holly Hughes of the blog Holly Gets Quilty / @hollygetsquilty on InstaGram. She tested the pattern for me while also making it as a quilt for the Alison Glass Mini Quilt Swap! How brilliant is that? Kill two birds with one stone! So that means that she used only Alison Glass fabric as the sides and then Essex Linen as the background. Im in love with it. She will be sharing photos of the quilted up version soon, so once she does, I’ll share it here too! (I really really cant wait to see it)

I have also received a handful of finished block photos and some in progress shots. I think they all need their own blog post though, so keep your eyes peeled for those. I’ve seen the photos, its worth the wait.

Now back to the super technical, less sappy, pattern stuff…

I am calling this pattern the Spinning Icosahedron Mini Quilt. It’s name comes from the fact that it is an Icosahedron (20 sided Polyhedron) that is spinning and toppling, so you can see 18 sides of it. You can see this “spinning and toppling” by picking one triangle and following it through the 9 blocks until it disappears.

Like most of my patterns, this is a foundation paper piecing pattern that is broken up into many pieces. I have made a system to help keep all the sides and colors in order, plus I included a coloring page as a helpful guide. I have tried to make it as easy as possible to assemble.

Now onto the question I get from everyone…

“What size is it?”

Well, It is 24″ square when finished if you use the pattern as is. I know that is small, and you can’t really cover yourself with it, but it’s a great mini quilt/doll quilt/pillow. Plus, you can use the blocks individually OR change the lineup a bit and maybe only use three as a long pillow? Maybe use 5 or 6 as a table runner? Or maybe have a strip going down a quilt that is all 9 and then the rest is solid? I bet there are many ways these nine blocks can be used!

I have plans to release an 18″ block version, that would create a 54″ square quilt within the next month or so. It’s finished, I’m just waiting until I can stitch up a sample (its a 54 page pattern, with lots of taping, it’s been rough finding time to work on it with everything else going on these days). In the meantime, there is a work around. If your printer allows you to enlarge documents and then tile them over multiple pages, then you can technically make the blocks 16″ finished with a quilt 48″ square (or bigger by adding a border). If you are super lucky and have an awesome printer than you can probably go even larger.

Is there any interest in pre-printed paper patterns to help with this size thing? I’ve researched it a bit, and would love to go that direction eventually.

Ok, whew, I believe that’s it when it comes to all the technical stuff. If you buy the pattern and want to share photos, OR you are just curious what everyone else is making, then you should check out the hashtag #artschooldropoutpatterns and/or #spinningicosahedronquilt on InstaGram. You can also add any project photos to the Art School Dropout Pattern Flickr group: www.flickr.com/groups/miniasd/ .

I am super excited to get this pattern out there into the world, but I am also really excited to share the next pattern in the works. It’s not another spinning object, though I am thinking of doing an entire series!!

Happy sewing everyone!! I am going to go crash now…

I pressed like and went on my way!

The design seriously haunted me for months. I felt like I HAD to make it. It NEEDED to be a banner on my wall. I drew a paper pieced pattern of it into my sketchbook and put it aside for my upcoming “winter sewing months”.

Side Note: Apparently I prefer sewing in the winter, and knowing this has made my whole work schedule easier to handle. Sewing in the winter, jewelry & casting in the summer. It’s been working perfectly and I cast so much during the summer that I can continuously add to the shop all winter long!

So now back to the banner…

Two weeks ago I finally sat down at my computer and digitized the pattern i’d sketched up. It was a little big, but I didn’t mind taping together the paper. I went around searching for fabrics that complimented my house and then sat down to piece it all together. It took me about two hours total and I was so excited to hang it up!!!

I just happened to have a nice blank spot in the library! I added some striped bakers twine and glued a little geometric piece to the screw holding it up. I love it!!

I figured someone else may want to make one of these for their wall too, so I put together my simple paper pieced pattern as a FREE PDF. You will need a basic knowledge of paper piecing to make this btw. If you are comfortable with sewing but don’t know this technique yet, I suggest searching for some videos on YouTube, that’s how I taught myself. Fresh Lemons Quilts blog also has a great tutorial if you’re not into watching videos

If you do make a banner, I’d love to see it. Just send me a message!

I myself still don’t know how I’m going to use it. No matter what it ends up being, I LOVE it. It’s the first in a series of 12 designs that will eventually all go together. I’m still working on logistics, but what I picture in my head is perfect. Ha.

For now though, if you are interested in trying this paper pieced pattern out, you can find it in my Etsy shop at a very reasonable price! It ends up making an 8″ square piece which can be used as a quilt block or any of the things I mentioned above!! Oh, or you can add it to a dress, zipper pouch, tote bag, pillow or anything else you could possibly think of. The sky is the limit.

If you do use the pattern please note it is for home use only, and can not be used commercially. Also, I would really love to see any finished projects!! Just email me!
