My Week So Far: Crayons, Fabric and Plastic

myweeksofar_05_15_13_002myweeksofar_05_15_13_001myweeksofar_05_15_13_003I’ve been feeling a teeny bit better this week. I kinda know what I want to do, which is a big change from previous weeks. Also I have a nice weekend coming up, so that’s something to look forward to.

If the photos alone can’t explain my week, then I guess I will! Ha.

- CT has been very energetic and destructive, just in the time it took to make dinner Monday she took the paper off ALL OF THOSE CRAYONS! Yes, that picture should sum up my week so far as a mom. Oh my I don’t even know how to put into words what I’m feeling.

- I have been testing out a few different ways to paint on knit fabric. I have a bunch of ideas for dresses I’d like to make myself, but I knew I didn’t want to spend too much since I’m just starting out. Normally i’d just get something printed from Spoonflower, but I’d need 3 to 4 yards, thats $90 before shipping per dress. Yet, if I paint them and get fabric on sale, they end up being $20 a dress. Much scarier price tag for something that may not come out the way I want! Also, it seems I really enjoy painting again, even if its something very simple and sorta tedious. I like it!

- I FINALLY started casting this week. I’ve only had the supplies for a week and half. This time around hasn’t been as much fun. I keep having “technical difficulties” that are frustrating me! First one of the molds had a chemical reaction with a glue I’ve used before, and today one of the plastics I use won’t seem to cure!! I don’t want to be frustrated with something I love doing so much. Luckily though it’s just the opaque plastic, the clear plastic is curing just fine and I should have new pieces up in the shop by the end of next week

I hope the rest of the week goes well, I kinda need that right now.

Oh and friendly reminder that the second week of our 10 year anniversary giveaway ends Friday! You could win over $100 worth of hand cast plastic jewelry and accessories by ME!. Just pop over to Monday’s post and let me know what your favorite blog to read is!!

10 Year Anniversary + A Giveaway: Week Two

10year_giveaway002_001Today I will continue on with the 10 year anniversary “festivities”! When planning this I wanted to kinda have a theme with the giveaways. Last weeks was a Garden Necklace which showed the true start to Art School Dropout as a business and not just a hobby. This week I wanted to showcase the next step in my creative endeavours, which was hand cast plastic.

I started making my own plastic pieces sorta by accident. I HAD been researching ways to reproduce some of the plastic flowers and such that I used in my necklaces. Demand was greater than supply at the time (this was before I started buying vintage pieces in super bulk). I could never find a way that would work for me, and there were loads of options. I just happened to be browsing one of the art stores in Baltimore while waiting for a ride (I believe it was my sisters birthday and she wanted to show off her new car) when I came across plastic casting supplies. They had everything you needed to make the mold and cast a bit of plastic. I bought some rubber, some plastic and three different pigments to try out. I was excited! I LOVE trying new things! The idea of adding a new skill to my list just  makes me so happy.

Casting plastic was seriously love at first pour. It was great. It felt just like making creepy crawlers as a kid. Which was something I did a LOT. (I still compare it the same way today when asked) Depending on what plastic I used it was almost instant gratification. My love of mixing and matching colors was also utilized, different drops or squirts of pigments produced different shades, and then different plastic reacted different to those shades, so the possibilities were endless. To this day, casting plastic is still my favorite craft to do. It’s been almost 8 years and I’m still not bored.

Business wise it was awesome too! I was able to reproduce a bunch of vintage pieces in new vibrant, colorful forms. I could make a neon pink fly to go in your hair, or a lime green octopus to hang around your neck or a tan camera to wear on your finger. It was a lot fun, and I’m so glad my sister was late picking me up that day, otherwise I may not have stumbled on this awesomeness!

10year_giveaway002_001 10year_giveaway002_002So, to go along with the giveaway theme, I am giving away all the hand cast plastic pieces pictured above! (In the blue and yellow photo, I couldn’t fit it all nicely in one photo!) I tried to pick and choose as many different pieces as possible without going TOO overboard!!

Shop Update: Garden Necklaces

I updated the shop with three new Garden Necklaces and a few zig-zag necklaces. I’m hoping to make more at some point this month, so keep an eye out if your interested in other colors!

I’m gearing up today to cast plastic too, I’m hoping it’ll spark some kind of creativity. I’m mostly working on custom orders, but I made sure to buy extra plastic specifically for testing new and different designs.

Oh and here’s the last reminder that the first week or our 10 year anniversary giveaway ends tonight! You could win a Blue Garden Necklace in the same style as the necklaces above. Just pop over to Monday’s post and let me know what your favorite color combo is!!

Lost

I’ve been wanting to write more posts about things like feelings and everyday life, but sometimes the sheer idea of that scares the crap out of me. Do I really want everyone to know just how miserable and vulnerable I feel lately? How Lost I feel? How scared I am of EVERYTHING!

About a week ago a friend of mine posted she felt the same way, and said she had shared it with the world so she was now accountable for those feelings, so she could try and change them. I like the idea of that. The idea that if I put it out there, it is known, it is no longer my own secret. It is something I can try and change.

I feel super lost. I wake up every morning and have so much that I want to do, but I feel so overwhelmed that I don’t get anything done. Two months of being super tired and trying to (mostly) hide it made things even worse. I don’t even want to leave the house, yet I feel like I’m probably missing out by not doing so. I am constantly struggling with myself about everything. Even the smallest details frustrate the hell out of me right now. “Tea or Coffee? I have no idea so I won’t drink either”.

It’s seriously affecting my creativity too!! I can’t decide on anything! I have no idea what I want to do, who I am, where am I going, what am I doing with my life. Art School Dropout turning 10 years old this month made me question a lot. Do I want to continue this path? Do I want to do something different? I love making things, but still ask these things daily, maybe that means I should try something different?

I look in the mirror everyday and don’t even recognize myself anymore. I look tired and sad, no matter how much I try to smile. Before the gluten test crap, I was going to the gym regularly and losing weight, I felt great. Now it is a nightmare to even think about going to the gym, or how I’ll get there! My gym buddy has a super large workload right now and cant drive me (If your reading this Ash, I’m not upset about that), which brings me to the biggest thing bringing me down. I don’t drive, I did once, but I haven’t had a drivers license in 10 years. Before moving out to the country I didn’t need to drive. We lived in the city! I had public transit and a scooter. Now I have daily reminders that yes, I am 30, and I do not have a drivers license. It is now my own fault that I don’t drive. The idea of driving scares me. Especially now that I have a little in tow. But the idea of wasting away in the house also scares me.

“What If?”. that phrase really is my biggest problem. “What if I wear so and so dress, will I be looked at funny because I’m not the right size?” “What if I submit my fabric designs and no one likes them?” “What if I wreck the car?” “What if they hate me because I speak my mind?”

“Why even try?”

At first I felt selfish spouting out all this negative talk, I have edited and re-written this post so many times. But then I remembered, this is my space to talk and I should feel comfortable enough in it to say whatever I feel like saying. I feel it also shows I am a real person whose definitively not all cheery and colorful all the time. I have feelings, pretty sensitive ones actually. Sometimes you just need to get it all out without forcing one innocent bystander to listen constantly (like my poor husband and friends). I feel like this might be my first step to being a better ME, and if not, writing this post was way cheaper than a therapy session.

Has anyone else out there felt this way? Did you ever get over it? Without the help of prescribed drugs? I would love to hear your stories! If you already have a blog post just link it, otherwise I’m cool with long comments or private emails!

If I Had Unlimited Funds: Big Bags

It was until I started working on this post did I realize I have a “type” when it comes to bags! I didn’t even know it until I saw all the bags I liked together on one screen. It was crazy to me. I always thought I had a wide range of taste in bags. Then I looked over at my favorite purse, and realized it too falls into this “type” (It’s a forest green Fossil satchel). Ha.

Anyway, If I had unlimited funds to buy any and all the bags I like, I’d buy…

1 & 2Organic Cotton Weekend Bag by Jenna Rose Handmade (These bags are all so nice! I’m seriously trying to figure out which one would work for me. I think they’d be great to carry my camera and a few other odds and ends!)

3Garrison Bag by Winter Session (I really love the size and shape of this bag! Plus it has a longer shoulder strap, which is super useful when chasing a toddler)

4Unisex Canvas Backpack  /// 5UniSex Olive Green Canvas Messenger both bags are by Bagy Bags (These look like super useful bags! The one on the left especially. I’ve been thinking a backpack type bag may actually work really for me. I like wearing backpacks actually)

6ZIP TOTE – rain/waxed by bookhou (I have loved their bags since the first time I saw one! They are awesome!! Simple but interesting at the same time. Plus it looks like this one could hold my camera too!)

7NO 2 Backpack in Tobacco by Ada Black Jack (seriously, another super useful looking bag!! When I get the funds to actually buy a new bag, I’m going to have serious issues picking just one!) /// 8Screen Printed Tote Bag – Broken Arrows by Slide Sideways (This bag is just too cute! Look at all those little arrows!! and it looks like a great size for a camera too!)

As you may be able to tell, I’m in need of a bag that I can use as my everyday purse, but also use to hold my camera in it’s case. I really want to take more pictures out and about, but my camera is just so bulky, and my purses are just so small. It’s not a good mix. I’m hoping to get together some funds and pick out one or two of these bags (which is going to be hard), or maybe even one I don’t know about yet!! Any other suggestions?

Oh and friendly reminder! make sure to check out Monday’s post where you can win a Blue Garden necklace, just by telling me your favorite color combo!

Behind the Scenes: Organizing the Workroom

I spent some time this weekend FINALLY organizing my workroom, or trying to at least. The poor room has been in shambles since February, which is when I started on the gluten testing (and got super sick and weak). I had been just throwing stuff in boxes on the floor or on the table. Nothing was where it was supposed to be and it was starting to get out of hand. How could I start working again if I couldn’t find anything?

I wish I could say I finished the room, but if that was true, you would see more than close up pictures! I still have a lot of work to do. I need to install some more shelves in the closet for supplies that are only used every so often. I need a few more containers for scrap fabric (all the blue and green fabrics are just in piles until this happens). I need to get all my quilting fabric on bolts and out of the baskets to make room for more apparel fabric (I have plans). I need to transfer all my beading supplies to one area. I need some actual lighting and maybe a chair? Ha. yeah, that’s the state of things, I don’t even have a chair!

I’m also thinking of doing some cosmetic things in the room, just to make it pretty to me. I was thinking last night about maybe a chalkboard wall? I have one in my kitchen and love it, but I’m a bit worried about a mess. The one in the kitchen leaves chalk dust all over the baseboards and wood floors. It’s easy enough to clean up, but I don’t know how easy that would be on carpet. Has anyone else had experience with this? How about Chalk Pens? Maybe they wouldn’t have the dust? (I think I have one around here somewhere to try out)

Once this room is done, just like the kitchenette, I’ll share more photos!!

Oh and friendly reminder! make sure to check out yesterdays post where you can win a Blue Garden necklace, just by telling me your favorite color combo!
