I just thought I’d share some photos of the cinnamon and vanilla buttercream macarons from the previous post! I’m so excited they actually worked again! I thought the first try was a fluke.

I want to make more this weekend to get even more comfortable making them, but I can’t decide on a flavor combo. Any suggestions?

Doily Party

Yep the title says Doily Party! Doilies are boring and parties are not (usually)… So why would the two words be put together?
Well… Heidi had another craft party! They are pretty much a monthly thing now. Which is super awesome because I’m really enjoying them.

I didn’t bring a snack or anything to the previous party, I just didnt have the time, and I really wanted to. So this time I made up for it by trying my hand at macarons again. I made cinnamon and buttercream macarons that I tinted purple. They came out great!

You can see them above next to Hedi’s pink lemonade cake, which was tart just like real lemonade. CT really liked it. She also made homemade soup and bread and Amanda made spiced ice tea.

The planned project was to make one of the doily lamps or bowls you see all over Pinterest. I’ve been wanting to make one for my sewing room for awhile. I had been collecting doilies ever since I was told about the get together. My original plan was to dye them a bunch of different colors, but I got so caught up in thrifting lately I forgot until the last minute. So I was only able to dye them two colors. They were supposed to be black and grey, but they ended up plum and grey, which was even better!

We could choose to make either a lamp or a bowl, most of the (smart) guest chose to make bowls, except Heidi and I. I really wanted the lamp. I really really wanted it. It turns out attaching floppy doilies to a balloon is much harder than you would expect. They like to slip off and the balloon doesn’t like to hold still. Too top heavy. Heidi gave up and started a bowl, which I should have done too, but I was determined to have that damn lamp.

I ended up getting about five to stay put. The modge podge like concoction we were using wasn’t drying, so I had to take my balloon lamp home wet. We live 45 mins away and had to stop a few times, so by the time it got home, only three doilies had survived. The photo above is from the day after, once it finally all dried.

Oh well. The get togethers are more for, well, getting together. Talking, eating, hanging out and having fun. The craft stuff is just an added perk. As usual I really enjoyed myself and it was awesome seeing everyone again, plus I even met a new person who collects a lot of the same things as me! How neat.

You can read more about the party, from a different perspective, over on Heidi’s blog!

Thrift Finds: March 30th thru April 18th

The weather is sooo much nicer, and it hasn’t rained super hard in awhile. It has been perfect weather for going to thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales and antique malls. I’ve been documenting my amazing finds on Instagram, but I thought it would be neat to show it all on here too!

Be warned, it’s been a good couple of weeks, so there’s a few photos!

As you can see, my pyrex collection, that WAS small, has grown A LOT! Plus I found a bunch of travel plates for my plate collection, a cute little desk for CT, a mini house for my house collection, a set of mugs for my Disney collection, an awesome silver plated jewelry box and THE KARATE KID (with arm chopping motion)!!

I think I may have said the word “collection” a few too many times, but I’m that kind of girl. The collecting kind.

oh and if anyone wants to see my daily finds, the day I find them, my Instagram user name is jesseesuem.

Adventures In Hanging Plates

Awhile back I commented on the fact that I was going to be painting my dining room very soon. I had painted the swatches on the wall, chose the perfect color, bought the paint and all the other supplies. I was ready, but then the holidays came, then my Fab sale, and a bunch of other little things.

I had mentioned to my brother in law, Trey, that I really wanted it painted and that I would totally pay him to do it when he had free time, since I didn’t have any myself. His response…

“Sweetie, I’ll come over tomorrow night and do it!” and HE DID! It took two nights and a second trip to Sherwin Williams, but in the end it looks AWESOME!

I LOVE the color! and I think it really makes the room feel more special and unique.

Before we painted I had a bunch of stuff on the walls… a huge Batman print, a few shelves for my Dunnys, a mirror and bunch of plates. I think the only traditional thing in this room was the wall of plates. I couldn’t wait to put them back up on a new, much darker, wall.

Since I decided to paint this room, months ago, I had accumulated a few more plates in my collection. A couple I picked up at thrift shops and major retailer, and a few my grandmother gave me. Those are all on the right side of the table above. They were all from her very own plate collection! How neat is that? apparently plate walls run in my family. ha. Anyway, since I had new pieces I couldn’t just put them all up the way they were! My plan of attack was to arrange them on the table until I found an arrangement I liked.

That didn’t work, so instead I chose my favorite plate (the white one with the black branches and bird) and placed it in the middle of the wall. I then just chose a random plate here and there, making sure not to have colors too similar next to each other, and hung them up. As you can sorta see from above, I changed my mind every so often. Like with the periwinkle colored plate. It moved all over the place. I ended up having the wrong plate hanger size for a few, which I plan to buy very soon, but for now it is DONE!

It’s one of my favorite walls in the house. I love that it combines new and old, and plastic and glass. Each plate shows a little of my personality and life! Like the plate CT painted during her first vacation last year, or the plate from the set we got as a wedding gift, or the plate we ate off of all the time in our first apartment!

I hope to keep adding more pieces, which I plan to share with you guys along the way.
