Behind the Scenes: Taking Product Photos…

I’m getting all geared up for the huge shop update on Friday! I’ve been assembling last minute pieces and taking photos all day.

I thought I’d share a peak at my super super simple photo setup. Don’t mind the crappy lighting, I waited until the end of the day to snap these! I use only natural light for now, so I’m very limited to when I can take photos. I’d love to have a real light setup, but that will have to wait until I can squeeze it into the budget. A girl can dream though…

Blythe Eye Chip Test…

This past weekend was spent doing one of the things I love the most… casting plastic! A great way to spend the weekend in my opinion.

I had a friend request some Blythe eye chips for one of her girls, plus I had some new 3D printed pieces I wanted to test out, so I put aside a big chunk of time to get them all done. I am so happy I did! It was so much fun to think outside the box and work with clear plastic for once. I even messed around with glitters, powders, fillers and beads. I now love it all!! I may be glitter obsessed.

I may have gone a little overboard with the eye chips too, as you can see in the first photo, but I’m ok with that. Whatever is left over, after friends pick out some pieces, I’ll add to the shop soon!

I also have a whole new line of necklaces, brooches, hair pins and bracelets now. I seriously can’t wait to share those with you. Maybe tomorrow I’ll do a sneak peek (as long as the weather permits photos, were expecting snow!)

Behind the Scenes: Pillows, Dresses and a Very Tired Jessee

I’ve been a little down in the dumps lately. I’m on a new test diet to see just how much I’m allergic to gluten, which has not been fun. Basically I have to force myself to eat something with a gluten ingredient in it everyday for the next five weeks (I take the weekends off). So I pretty much have been poisoning myself! I’m tired, grumpy and weak. I just don’t have the energy to do too many projects, so I’ve been trying to stick to the easy ones, or computer based ones.

Which brings me to the above photos! In my down time lately (which is pretty often) I have been dreaming up loads of new things. New Wonky Woodgrain pillows in the above colors, new monster pillows, and a whole pile of dresses for myself (remember that dress obsession I was talking about?). I was able to do most of the design work on the computer and then just order the fabric from Spoonflower. I also have been designing some new 3D pieces for a cold cast metal jewelry line I’ve been thinking about! I’m excited!

Everything was easy enough, and I feel accomplished in the end. I hate not feeling accomplished at least once a day!

I promise to post more photos when I get to actually work on all these things. I’m seriously counting down the days until I can be gluten free again. I miss the energy I had and how great I felt about myself.

Behind The Scenes: “My Favorite 80′s Sweater” Quilt

Say Hello to the brightest quilt I’ll probably ever make (unless someone know where to find good quality neon fabric). It started out as a sketch in muted tones last week, but turned into randomly picking out of my Kona Cotton stash for colors with enough yardage for each piece.

I’m calling it “My Favorite 80′s Sweater” because that’s all I can think of while piecing it! I probably owned a sweater, dress or jacket that looked something like this as a kid.

This thing is seriously forcing me out of my color comfort zone. My zone normally consists of purples, teals, pink and gray… LOTS OF GRAY! And normally it’s just one of those tones mixed with gray, not all of them blended together. I’m also using this quilt to practice different methods of sewing patchwork. I’ve tried out chain piecing, which saved me loads of time, and strip piecing, which also saved time, and I’m getting better with half square triangles (which I now love, instead of fear and hate). Oh and I’m getting better at sewing long straight lines, ha, something I wasn’t that great at before.

While sewing this top together I kept thinking of better ways to do each strip, in case I ever want to sew this again, which was really neat. It’s all a learning process, and I’m loving it! I seriously can’t wait to share the finished piece! I still have three rows to go and then it’s off to someone else who will quilt it for me. So it may be a few weeks.

Behind The Scenes: Preparing for Crafty Bastards 2012

Above is a photo of some of the tools and supplies I will be using today. I will also be using scissors, a large paper cutter, a table saw, a drill, a dremel, a hammer and some nails. Whew.

I’m still running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off. This is the first show I’ve done with all my new pieces, so mass assembling, packaging and displays are all new to me again. Today is dedicated to putting chain on all the new necklaces, packaging them and assembling all the display pieces I cut out. I’m very happy with how everything is coming out, and I can’t wait to show you guys the fruit of my labor!!

If any of you reading this will be attending Crafty Bastards this Saturday in DC, then please check back here Friday for an exclusive, show only, coupon for our booth. Also, if you haven’t bought your tickets yet, they are now on sale online, Buy One Get One Free! If you wait until the day of the show, tickets are $5.

Behind The Scenes: Sewing Little Dresses

As I said yesterday, the weather has been really dreary. So I haven’t had the chance to get good photos of what I’ve been working on. Instead I have these photos I quickly took while sewing.

I’m making CT four dresses for our Disney vacation later this month, each with a different theme. I have finished three of them so far and I’m about to go start the last one. Which is also the hardest one for me. Lot’s of “make it up as you go” pieces involved. I’m also aiming to make a crayon roll, and a few random pouches. I might get it all done, who knows.

While I’m sorta on the topic of travel. Have any of you flown with a toddler? A very energetic toddler? Our flight is only two hours long, but I’m still antsy about how it’s going to go. Any and all suggestions to make it a bit easier are greatly appreciated!!!
